How to Properly Maintain and Service Your UML Lifejacket Inflator: A Step-by-Step Guide
Your lifejacket is only as reliable as the inflator that activates it. At United Moulders Limited (UML), we take safety seriously—and regular maintenance of your UML lifejacket inflator is essential for ensuring it performs when you need it most.
Whether you’re a weekend sailor or a commercial operator, following these simple steps can help extend the life of your UML inflator and give you peace of mind every time you head out on onto the water.
Why Maintenance Matters
UML inflators are engineered to the highest safety standards, but like all precision devices, they require occasional checks and servicing. Environmental conditions, age, and wear can all affect the inflator’s performance. A properly maintained lifejacket inflator ensures:
- Reliable inflation when needed
- Compliance with safety regulations
- Longer lifespan of your lifejacket system
Step-by-Step Maintenance Guide
Step 1: Check the Expiry Date
Locate the expiry date, (sometimes known as RBD (Replace By Date) printed on the cartridge. If expired, or close to expiration replace the cartridge. Always replace the cartridge if your lifejacket has been activated or every 2 years regardless of the expiry date.
🔧 Tip: Replacement cartridges can be sourced from the lifejacket manufacturer, reputable chandlers/dealer or online stores.
Step 2: Inspect the CO₂ Cylinder
Remove the cylinder and check for:
- Expiry Date
- Corrosion
- Punctures
- Weight consistency (compare to the stamped weight on the cylinder)
If anything looks suspicious, replace it. A damaged cylinder may not inflate your lifejacket in an emergency.
Step 3: Examine the Activation Mechanism
Carefully inspect the firing mechanism, checking for the following:
- No moisture or residue inside the housing
- Green indicator is clearly visible (on models with a status window)
- No physical damage or wear to the firing pin or springs
- Remove and replace gas seal
- Remove and replace O-rings
Step 4: Reassemble and Test
After inspection and any necessary replacements:
- Reinstall the CO₂ cylinder and cartridge
- Make sure components are properly aligned and hand-tightened
- Check that all indicators show green
🔧 Tip: Service kits can be sourced from the lifejacket manufacturer, reputable chandlers / dealer or online stores.
Step 5: Store Properly
Always store your lifejacket in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight, salt, or chemicals. Avoid crushing or folding the inflator housing.
When to Service or Replace Your Inflator
- Annually: Full inspection
- After use or immersion: Rinse through with fresh water, replace the CO₂ cylinder and cartridge, and inspect the firing mechanism
- Every 2 years: Replace the cartridge
- Every 5 years: Consider replacing the entire inflator unit depending on usage and manufacturer guidelines
